Borrowing policies

  • All persons who live, work, attend school, or own property in York Region are entitled to a free Library card.
  • Proof of name and address is required to obtain a card. Proof of name and address may be the same document if the identification has a photograph. Otherwise, 2 documents are required. Proof of address can be your valid Ontario Driver's Licence, Ontario Photo Card, Ontario Motor Vehicle Permit, Property Tax Bill, Age of Majority Card, Old Age Security Card, etc. Proof of name can be your Birth Certificate, valid Ontario Driver's Licence, Passport, Social Insurance Number, Student ID Card, etc.

  • Persons under 14 require a parent's signature and the parent must be present when the child receives the card.
  • A person 14 and over must show ID and sign the card upon registration uless unable to do so due to a disability.

  • Always bring your card to borrow material.

  • Non-residents may pay a $30 annual fee to become a member.

  • Most loans are for 3 weeks; some high-demand items may be for a shorter period of time.

  • Materials may be renewed twice, unless an item has been reserved.

  • You may renew material in person, by phone, by Telemessaging or via the Internet. Telemessaging and Internet renewals require both your library card and password.

Please note that the Library has an overnight return slot.

 

Placing Holds

  • You can place a hold on a circulating item by using our Online Catalogue, or by phoning the Library. You will be notified by Telemessaging or by email when the item is available for pickup. If you are going on vacation, you can temporarily suspend your holds through our online catalogue.

 

To access your Library account through the online catalogue or through Telemessaging you will need:

  • Your Password
  • Your Newmarket Public Library membership card number

ADULT PRINT MATERIAL (including CDs & audio books)

  • $.20/day per item

  • $5.00 max. per item
  • Borrowing privilege suspended at $10.00

 

YOUNG ADULT PRINT MATERIAL (including CDs & audio books)

  • $.10/day per item

  • $1.00 max. per item
  • Borrowing privilege suspended at $5.00

 

CHILDREN'S PRINT MATERIAL (including CDs & audio books)

  • $.05/day per item
  • $1.00 max per item
  • Borrowing privilege suspended at $5.00

 

VIDEOs/DVDs//Video Games

  • $1.00 per day per item
  • $10.00 max. per item $1.00 per day per item

 

Kobo eReaders

  • $5.00 per day per item
  • $20.00 max. per item
  • $150.00 plus processing fee if item is lost


Fines are waived for registered Seniors, so please let us know if you are 65 or older so we can update our records. Processing fees apply.

 

Processing Fees

  • A $5 non-refundable processing fee is charged when a bill for replacement is sent at 5 weeks overdue.

 

Lost Cards

  •  You are responsible for any item borrowed on your Library card. Please report a missing or stolen card immediately. The replacement cost is $2.

 

24-Hour Return Box

  • You can return Library materials 24/7 at the return box located to the right of the Library's main entrance.

 

Upper Canada Mall Return Box

  • The Library also has a return box located near the Yonge Street entrance under the escalator in front of Sears.
